"I want to spend the day with my family," said Larkin, 59.
But while Thanksgiving shopping refuseniks like Larkin are vocal in their complaints about the increasing encroachment into the holiday's sanctity, they may be fighting a losing battle, as retailers open early to lure shoppers on tight budgets.
Nearly one in four people responding to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation say they will shop on Thanksgiving.
Indeed, while a handful of major retailers like Lowe's, Von Maur, Cabela's, Costco, Sam's Club and Nordstrom Rack are holding out for a traditional Black Friday morning opening, an estimated 33 million people, or 23 percent of those surveyed by the retail federation, say Thanksgiving will find them in stores at some point.

What: Shares of the Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI ) were looking under the weather today, falling as much as 10% after a disappointing earnings report.
- [By Ben Levisohn]
Barclays upgraded share s of Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) today, expressing a confidence in management that was, well, heartwarming.
Barclays’ analysts Meredith Adler and Sean Kras call Vitamin Shoppe’s management team “thoughtful, deliberate and disciplined” and praise their ability to diversify the business. As a result, they upgraded Vitamin Shoppe to Overweight from Equal Weight two days after Vitamin Shoppe released its earnings.
But Adler and Kras also spent a good number of words explaining what Vitamin Shoppe isn’t–specifically, it’s not GNC Holdings (GNC):
[Vitamin Shoppe] said it saw no fundamental change in consumer demand, nor did it feel much pressure from the bad media reports about things like multi-vitamins and fish oil, unlike GNC. [Vitamin Shoppe] has a much broader offering than GNC, however, so weakness in any one category rarely has a major impact on[Vitamin Shoppe's] overall sales the way it does at GNC. Conversely, it benefits less when there are few very successful products. For example, diet is a far smaller part of the sales mix at[Vitamin Shoppe] than at GNC. Last year diet had some strong products, but this year there are fewer. GNC comps were stronger than[Vitamin Shoppe's] last year, but we like the stability of[Vitamin Shoppe's] business, especially in the current environment.
Shares of Vitamin Shoppe have gained 1.8% to $43.42 at 3:24 p.m., while GNC has risen 0.8% to $37.43.

Sales growth this last quarter was up only about 6%, but net income per share was up 21%. They pay a $0.60 dividend which gives them a dividend yield of 1.4%. Their cash flow yield is 4.6%, so they could easily raise their dividend. They are by far the leader in a very fragmented industry. I believe both [Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI ) ] and GNC will do well and I think they may make a fair pairing in a portfolio. Stability versus growth.
They do have $1.1 billion in debt. But they generate about $200 million in cash flow a year and they have $174 million in cash, so that shouldn't be a problem. Their cash flow is very high, so in my opinion, is reason enough to believe they will beat the S&P 500 over the next ten years.

Among holdings in which Douglas C. Lane increased its stake were VeriFone Systems (NYSE: PAY ) and American Tower (NYSE: AMT ) . VeriFone has seen its stock nearly halved over the past year, as it has repeatedly posted disappointing quarterly results and weak guidance. Indeed, results reported in June sent shares down some 20%. A board member recently bought about half a million dollars worth of shares though, signaling confidence, and bulls like a recent deal with China. With a single-digit forward P/E ratio, VerFone is seen as attractive by some, and as a possible acquisition target. Others, though, are wary, fearing that competitors will eat VeriFone's lunch.

Among holdings in which Citadel increased its stake was American Tower (NYSE: AMT ) . With the stock averaging 25% annual gains over the past decade and a forward P/E ratio near 30, some see the real estate investment trust (REIT) as overvalued. Others still see opportunity, though, expecting growing demand for the company's towers that facilitate wireless communications. Another plus is itsrising dividend, which recently yielded 1.4%. Its international growth has also been particularly strong lately.

Before the bell on Monday, analysts at Nomura Securities upgraded telecommunication tower site operator American Tower Corp (AMT) due to an industry wide upgrade of telecom tower operators, including the non-dividend paying companies SAB Comm (SBAC) and Crown Castle (CCI).
The analysts upgraded AMT from “Neutral” to “Buy” and now see shares reaching $90, up from the previous price target of $85. This new price target suggests a 22% upside to the stock’s Friday closing price of $73.71.
“Tower industry revenue grew over 20% in 1H13, helped by strong carrier network spending and tower acquisitions,” Nomura analyst Adam Ilkowitz noted. “On an organic basis, we believe site rental revenue growth of ~11% for the tower operators is a sign of the health of the U.S. wireless industry and elevated capital spending. After 30% portfolio growth in 2012 across the three tower operators, profitability is recovering from diluted levels. Despite a still-tepid global economy, carriers are investing in their networks to respond to consumer demands and traffic growth. With our positive outlook and upwardly revised estimates, we are increasing our target prices for AMT and SBAC both from $85 to $90 and raising AMT to a Buy. We are raising our 2014 AFFO estimates for all three operators given strong activity levels and announced acquisitions.”
Furthermore, the analysts at Nomura lowered AMT’s fiscal 2013 adjusted funds from operations (AFFO) estimates from $3.69 to $3.65, but raised its fiscal 2014 AFFO estimates from $4.25 to $4.50.
American Tower Corp shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Monday. The stock is up 22.83% year-to-date.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Tyler Crowe and Aimee Duffy]
There have been some mixed signals coming from Brazil's largest oil company, Petrobras (NYSE: PBR ) . The company has been able to pick up its production numbers lately thanks to some of its idle rigs coming back on line. Also, the company seems to be lining itself up well to expand operations into the pre-salt layer, which will be auctioned off for the first time in October. The problem, though, is that the company will need to add to its already large debt load to make it happen.
