Top 5 Internet Stocks To Watch For 2014

Don look now, but the Nasdaq Composite index, which is dominated by technology stocks, recently set a 14-year high, closing March 5 at 4358. But it the only major U.S. stock index that hasn established a new record this year. Which makes me wonder: Have investors learned the lessons of the tech bubble too well? Plenty of tech stocks look attractive to me at current levels, and the tech sector is likely to grow robustly in the coming years. But the tech crash early this century was so terrible that many investors still won touch these stocks.

It important not to forget how we got here. Everyone knows how crazy investors acted in the late 1990s and early 2000. Many tech stocks traded at triple-digit price-earnings ratios and double-digit price-to-sales ratios. Many Internet start-ups with high-flying stocks had no profits and sometimes no revenues. Stocks rebounded from yesterday's stumble today, advancing on Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen's firm but vague vows to keep interest rates at historical lows. How was she firm, yet vague, simultaneously? She was unwavering in her conviction that rates should remain low, but absolutely noncommittal when pressed on how long those policies should continue. Though she caught some flak for being evasive, monetary policy would cease to be effective if it were precisely choreographed ages in advance. Though Wall Street received Yellen's remarks well, it cringed at the sight of Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM  ) , Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO  ) , and First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) today, and each stock finished near the bottom of the S&P 500 Index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) . The S&P, for its part, added 10 points, or 0.6%, to end at 1,878.

With just 50 days until Christmas, let's take a look at which online retailer will be a bigger hit with shoppers this year.

Spotting the winners in online-only retail is a very tricky deal because there really aren many publicly traded options. Beyond Amazon and eBay (EBAY), you might have a handful of names worth considering, including ZU stock. Add in the fact retailers aren nearly as forthcoming about their monthly sales numbers as they used to be and you have a very imprecise exercise.
