Gannett (GCI) rose 3.6% to $26.67 after Belo (BLC) shareholders approved a merger of the two companies. Belo’s stock fell 0.6% to $13.72.

Carnival (CCL) fell 5.3% to $32.70 today, a day after falling nearly 8% on disappointing earnings. Barron’s says it’s time to buy.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

The main catalyst for Gannett's rise was its June announcement that it would acquire television broadcaster Belo (NYSE: BLC  ) in a $2.2 billion deal. The purchase will add Belo's 20 television stations to Gannett's existing broadcasting portfolio, nearly doubling Gannett's station count to 43, and giving it nine more stations in key top-25 markets. Even though the company paid a 28% premium for Belo, Gannett's stock also soared on the news, rising as much as 35% on hopes that diversifying its media exposure will prevent it from suffering the fate of a declining newspaper industry.

Before the opening bell on Wednesday, packaged foods manufacturer General Mills, Inc. (GIS) reported that its first quarter profit declined 16% year-over-year, despite an 8% rise in quarterly sales. However, earnings were able to meet Wall Street analysts’ expectations, while sales topped views.

The Minneapolis, Minnesota-based company posted a first quarter net income of $459.3 million, or 70 cents per share, down from the $548.9 million, or 82 cents per share, earned in the same period a year ago. According to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, the company was expected to earn 70 cents per share in the most recent quarter.

General Mills’ first quarter revenues rose to $4.37 billion, up 8% from the $4.05 billion in sales posted in the first quarter last year. On average, analysts were expecting the company to see $4.29 billion in revenues in the quarter.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ken Powell said this performance represented a solid start to the new fiscal year. “In particular, our net sales growth in the quarter reflects a healthy mix of gains from established brands, strong introductory shipments for new products, and contributions from new businesses added to our portfolio. These first-quarter results have us on track to achieve the key financial targets we’ve set for fiscal 2014.”

The company said that sales from new businesses and products contributed 5 percentage points to General Mills’ 8% total sales growth.

Looking forward, the company reaffirmed its fiscal 2014 guidance. General Mills expects revenues to grow in the low single-digits for the year, operating profits to grow in the mid single-digits, and adjusted earnings per share to come in between $2.87 and $2.90. Wall Street analysts expect the company to earn $2.92 per share in fiscal 2014.

General Mills shares were up 32 cents, or 0.64%, during pre-market trading on Wednesday. The stock is up 23.16% year-to-dat

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By 4Percent]

Offshore drilling companies have become a popular destination for income investors looking for high yields. But with the downturn in the industry, should investors be concerned with the safety of these fat dividend payments? Today we will look at one of those high yielders, Ensco Plc (ESV). With a current yield near 6.0% and a recent history of impressive dividend growth, Ensco offers an enticing income option.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

The question for investors is if the industry can handle all of this new capacity over the long term. Transocean (NYSE: RIG  ) has seven new ultra-deepwater rigs under construction,Ensco (NYSE: ESV  ) is building four, and Noble (NYSE: NE  ) will add five in coming years. Adding that much capacity means that $600,000 daily rates may not last forever, which would lower return on investment for everyone.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Holly LaFon] s a machinery rental service for construction, industrial, petrochemical, governmental and manufacturing businesses in the U.S. and Canada. RSC tends to benefit in economic downturns, as more businesses turn to renting rather than buying equipment to cut costs. Rented equipment rose 20.7% percent (the sixth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth) and rental revenue increased 27% in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to last year.

United Rentals (URI), one of RSC largest competitors, had a rental revenue increase of 18.5% in the fourth quarter compared to last year, which included a 6.7% increase in rental rates.

The company fleet utilization also increased to 69% for 2010, up 510 bps from 2010, and it spent $616 million in gross rental capital expenditures to keep up with demand.

Part of the growth is a result of management decision in 2006 to expand beyond the cyclical construction market to the largely untapped non-construction and industrial markets that need machinery for mining and oil and gas drilling.

RSC Holdings has a market cap of $2.26 billion; its shares were traded at around $22.15 with a P/E ratio of 197.91 and P/S ratio of 1.49.

  • [By Keith Speights]

    1. Keep it simple
Buffett likes to keep things simple and understand the business before he buys. DaVita Healthcare Partners (NYSE: DVA  ) is a great example of this desired simplicity. The company provides dialysis services for patients with chronic kidney disease or end stage renal disease. Patients with these diseases can't survive without dialysis. DaVita provides the service. It doesn't get much more simple than that.

Top Media Stocks To Own For 2014

Twitter tweeted September 12 that it had filed its S-1 registration statement with the SEC. The filing signals its intention to go public. Whatever its IPO price you know it's going to be extremely popular with institutions and big-time investors alike.

Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who owns $300 million of its stock, expects Twitter IPO later this year or early in 2014. He believes Twitter won't make the same mistakes Facebook (Nasdaq:FB) did and will price its stock realistically. Ordinary investors, who will have a hard time laying their hands on some of its IPO shares, are faced with the difficult decision of whether to purchase its stock once Twitter opens for trading.

Rather than stress about this, Ie got three ways you can get in the back door.

Option One

If you're Michael Moe of San Francisco-based GSV Capital (Nasdaq:GSVC), this news is music to your ears. GSV owns 1.84 million common shares of the social media messaging service, which it paid $33 million for ($18 per share) over a 12-month period between Q3 2011 and the Q2 2012. Recently these shares have traded between $20 and $30 on the secondary market. At the high-end, GSV is sitting on a $22 million unrealized gain. Twitter, which represents 15% of its overall investment portfolio, is far more important to the company than Facebook was when it went public in May 2012, and that debacle cut GSV's market cap by more than half in little more than two months. Any hiccup in Twitter's IPO could drop GSV's stock to single digits.

In Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX  ) pantheon of DC Comics characters, none stand so tall as Superman and Batman. But what about Wonder Woman? The Amazon princess could out-earn Man of Steel if given a real chance by Warner executives, says Fool contributor Tim Beyers in the following video.

The right story would take advantage of the viewing public's fascination not only with Greek mythology but also powerful women. Look at The Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence's appeal as bow-wielding heroine Katniss Everdeen earned nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office for Lions Gate (NYSE: LGF  ) . Three sequels are planned, including November's Catching Fire.

Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX  ) HBO service has been incredibly successful in maintaining a big subscriber base despite offering a limited content library. If Netflix can develop some of its originals into popular franchises, the company may realize its dream of becoming the next HBO, even if its content library shrinks on a "net" basis.

  • [By Tim Beyers]

Early reviews of Man of Steel are in, and they're, well, disappointing. Only 57% of critics like the film, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Not exactly Green Lantern numbers, but also a far cry from the 78% who like Iron Man 3. Strike two for DC Entertainment and Time Warner (NYSE: TWX  ) stock, right? Not exactly, says Tim Beyers of Motley Fool Rule Breakers and Motley Fool Supernova in the following video.

The negative reviews may not matter. According to U.K. newspaper The Independent, Warner has already recouped $170 million of Man of Steel's vast $225 million production budget via product placements from big names, including Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) , which apparently has a phone with with a "super signal" feature. Whatever that means.

Nothing short of box-office disaster is going to keep Warner from earning a profit on Man of Steel, Tim says, which may help to explain why the studio is already fast-tracking a sequel.

Comcast provides communications and entertainment products and services to consumers and companies. The company is much more likely to work with Charter Communications on a bid for Time Warner Cable than to pursue an offer on its own. The stock has been trending higher over the past few quarters, but is currently trading sideways. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been increasing, which has left investors pleased about recent earnings announcements. Relative to its peers and sector, Comcast has been a relative year-to-date performance leader. Look for Comcast to OUTPERFORM.

A meme that's recently enjoying some frequent sharing through social media like Facebooklists well-known consumer brands and companies, stating they are "owned" by genetically modified seeds giant Monsanto (NYSE: MON  ) and therefore, anyone who doesn't want to consume GMO foods should avoid them. Actually, though, it's not really accurate.

In many cases, some of the listed companies' brands do indirectly rely on Monsanto (and other companies that make genetically modified agricultural products) for ingredients. Are these brands or companies owned by Monsanto? No: That part's hogwash.

Here's the skinny on Monsanto and the grocery list.

Digging deeper into that anti-grocery list
The way Monsanto indirectly sneaks into Americans' grocery carts is simply that it genetically modifies seeds for common crops. So do other companies like DuPont, but they receive far less public scrutiny than Monsanto.

There are different variations of the anti-Monsanto social memefloating around, claiming that companies and brands like Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) , PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) , Coca-Cola,and other household names are owned by Monsanto.

'Interconnection' The better access that Netflix is getting from Comcast is known as "interconnection," a term referring to digital content's journey to an Internet service provider's gates. That path technically isn't covered by the current definition of Net neutrality, which refers to how service providers treat digital content once it's inside the gates. Comcast has promised to honor the previous rules governing Net neutrality through 2018. In a blog post last month, Hastings argued that future Net neutrality guidelines should be expanded to address interconnection issues, too. "Without strong Net neutrality, big ISPs can demand potentially escalating fees for the interconnection required to deliver high quality service," Hastings wrote. "The big ISPs can make these demands -- driving up costs and prices for everyone else -- because of their market position." Google's YouTube video site and many other websites were paying interconnection fees to Comcast before Netflix struck its own deal with the carrier. Even with the March improvements, Comcast's delivery of Netflix content lags behind several other major service providers. Cablevision (CVC), Cox, Suddenlink and Charter (CHTR) each delivered Netflix video at higher speeds than Comcast in March, according to Monday's breakdown. Netflix has interconnection deals with Cablevision, Cox and Suddenlink, although those arrangements don't require Netflix to pay fees.

For cable networks and distributors, first admire the long-term pricing power for cable services (shown in the chart below). Price increases have far exceeded the rate of gain of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for decades and thereby supported the stock prices and earnings growth of the entire industry (even though some companies such as Charter (CHTR) stumbled into bankruptcy even with this pricing wind at their backs).

West Marine (Nasdaq: WMAR) is an undervalued retailer.  The company is going through a change in focus from a bricks and mortar boat product retailer to a fully integrated retail and wholesale business through bricks and clicks, targeting the boating and water enthusiast customer.   Recent results have been affected by a severe rainy and cool spring which hurt boat usage and delayed the start of the season.  The company has accelerated cash investments to build larger more productive stores and expand its ecommerce abilities, consequently affecting free cash flow short term.  The stock lacks sponsorship as there is only one research report written on the company by a small boutique firm.  The stock trades at only book value despite the company being the leading industry player with a solid balance sheet and significant net cash position.

Vitamin Shoppe Inc (NYSE: VSI), Books-A-Million, Inc (NASDAQ: BAMM) and Perfumania Holdings, Inc (NASDAQ: PERF) have the dubious distinction of beingthe worst performing small capspecialty retail stocks for this year (according to Finviz.com) with losses of 4.85% and3% and a gain of 0.61%, respectively, since the start of the year (See my previous article: This Year Best Performing Small Cap Specialty Retail Stocks? UNTD, TA & HZO). I should mention that the definition of specialty retail stocks might vary from one stock screener to another, but what clear is that these three small cap retail stocks have been heading in the wrong direction for investors for much of this year. With that in mind, what sort of performance should investors expect from these small cap specialty retail stocks on Black Friday and for the all important holiday season? Here is what you need to be aware of:

  • [By Brian Pacampara]

Sales growth this last quarter was up only about 6%, but net income per share was up 21%. They pay a $0.60 dividend which gives them a dividend yield of 1.4%. Their cash flow yield is 4.6%, so they could easily raise their dividend. They are by far the leader in a very fragmented industry. I believe both [Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI  ) ] and GNC will do well and I think they may make a fair pairing in a portfolio. Stability versus growth.

They do have $1.1 billion in debt. But they generate about $200 million in cash flow a year and they have $174 million in cash, so that shouldn't be a problem. Their cash flow is very high, so in my opinion, is reason enough to believe they will beat the S&P 500 over the next ten years.

Barclays upgraded share s of Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) today, expressing a confidence in management that was, well, heartwarming.

Barclays’ analysts Meredith Adler and Sean Kras call Vitamin Shoppe’s management team “thoughtful, deliberate and disciplined” and praise their ability to diversify the business. As a result, they upgraded Vitamin Shoppe to Overweight from Equal Weight two days after Vitamin Shoppe released its earnings.

But Adler and Kras also spent a good number of words explaining what Vitamin Shoppe isn’t–specifically, it’s not GNC Holdings (GNC):

[Vitamin Shoppe] said it saw no fundamental change in consumer demand, nor did it feel much pressure from the bad media reports about things like multi-vitamins and fish oil, unlike GNC. [Vitamin Shoppe] has a much broader offering than GNC, however, so weakness in any one category rarely has a major impact on[Vitamin Shoppe's] overall sales the way it does at GNC. Conversely, it benefits less when there are few very successful products. For example, diet is a far smaller part of the sales mix at[Vitamin Shoppe] than at GNC. Last year diet had some strong products, but this year there are fewer. GNC comps were stronger than[Vitamin Shoppe's] last year, but we like the stability of[Vitamin Shoppe's] business, especially in the current environment.

Shares of Vitamin Shoppe have gained 1.8% to $43.42 at 3:24 p.m., while GNC has risen 0.8% to $37.43.
