It seems that the problem may have been on Nokia's end. A new rumor, sourced from an unknown "insider," hints at a near-term resolution to Nokia's 3G-woes. An upcoming firmware update may fix any 3G issues that has been plaguing Nokia's US-fleet of 5800 XpressMusic NAM cellphones. Early testing has supposedly proven successful in fixing the 5800 XM NAM's 3G problems, which means an official firmware update can't be too far off. The AP is reporting that Sanjay Jha received a 2008 pay package valued at $104.4 million. On the surface, that figure might sound exorbitant, especially given Motorola's recent financial losses, but closer analysis reveals that Jha will have to work mighty hard to get at that gigantic paycheck. Motorola gave Jha the bulk of his 2008 salary in the form of restricted stock and options. Jha's base salary is a more modest $484,615 plus $412,096 in perks (including a chauffeur, use of the corporate jet, relocation expenses and 401(k) matches), leaving $103.5 million in stocks and options that may turn out to be worth far less if Motorola's stocks don't triple their current value. If Motorola's mobile division isn't spun-off and sold by October 31, 2010, Jha will see his restricted stocks and options traded for a cool $30 million - a scenario that seems all that more likely since Motorola decided to put their spin-off plans on ice until the mobile division can be rehabilitated. Should the handset manufacturing arm of Motorola turn itself around and find a viable buyer, Jha's options will be converted in equity awards in the new company. Likewise, co-CEO Greg Brown has been given $22.6 million in restricted stocks and options as part of his $24.2 million 2008 pay package. The move will allow Radio Shack to cash in on the hype built around Verizon's new position as the market leader in the US, and will bring high-end smartphones like the BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) Storm to Radio Shack's handset lineup. | Did Toshiba leak upcoming Windows Mobile flip-phone to the FCC? Posted: 04 Mar 2009 12:47 PM PST
Toshiba's apparent FCC filing for the Toshiba TG01 is at once incredibly confusing and irresistibly intriguing. Toshiba has apparently filed for FCC approval of the upcoming Toshiba TG01, which isn't anything out of the norm - handset manufacturers, as a matter of course, have to ask for the FCC's blessing before selling their wares in The States. But, what caught our eye was the hardware description offered in the FCC documentation. In the filing, Toshiba proceeds to describe the TG01 - filed with the FCC as the Toshiba TM5-E01 - as a Windows Mobile 6 Professional handset with a secondary display. Now, for those of you not quite up to speed on Toshiba's upcoming WinMo smartphone, the Toshiba TG01 is a slate-based mobile phone with a 4.1-inch touchscreen display. As such, there's no secondary display on the TG01. Flip-phones, on the other hand, do have secondary displays. Moreover, the FCC documentation describes the hardware a having a 3-inch touchscreen, not the TG01's 4.1-inch media-monster. A quick glance at the FCC pics proves that Toshiba is pushing the TG01 through the FCC's testing labs. The only question is, why did Toshiba incorrectly list the TG01's specification?

While flame-engulfed iPhones are more the exception than the norm, Tim Colburne recently found himself in that rarest of minorities when his iPhone caught fire. Colburne plugged in his iPhone for a little recharging action, only to find that the charger had sparked a fire three hours into the charge-cycle. "The fire started in the space between the lead and the phone and resulted in a couple of pins fusing together," Colburne said on his blog. "Although the main functions of the phone are apparently unaffected, the device won't connect to the computer which means I can neither charge it nor transfer data. Result: one dead iPhone." So, the good news is that the iPhone charger-fire left the iPhone functional. The bad news is that the fried dock connector prevents any recharging of the iPhone. Great. Colburne managed to hunt down another iPhone-on-fire incidient in Sweden back in 2008, so he's at least part of a 2-person minority with flaming iPhones. And, as far as we know, there's been one other incident involving a super-heated iPhone and some guy's burned thigh. Anyone else out there find their iPhone getting too hot to handle? Previously referred to vaguely as the Application Storefront, RIM's direct-to-device channel for BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) applications has been officially christend as App World. As announced at the Developer Conference in October, the update was due to go live in March, and here we are with a proper name, likely to lead up to a public launch in the next couple of weeks. A full site for developers, blackberry.com/appworld, should be going live sometime tonight, along with notification sign-ups for those who just can't wait to get rolling in the apps. Just when we posted that generic (i.e. non-carrier specific) versions of the HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro are getting firmware updates, we've heard the AT&T (NYSE: T) Fuze (aka Touch Pro with AT&T's 3G frequencies) will be getting the same treatment. Actually, we're not quite sure it's exactly the same update that will come for the Fuze, but it looks good enough, nonetheless. Scrap that, there are tons of things that will be fixed and/or updated with the new Fuze firmware as you can see from this page on Xda-Developers, which prepared the rundown of all the changes. If you own the AT&T Fuze, there are two ways to proceed. If you feel adventurous enough you can hop over to Xda-Developers and grab their file. Alternatively, you may want to wait for AT&T and HTC to go all official with the update. We're always for the official routes, whenever possible. Hot on the heels of their Mobile World Congress announcements, Acer has announced four phones at CeBIT to be running Windows Mobile 6.5: the F1 with a 5 megapixel camera, the L1 a slider with alphanumeric keyboard, and the C and E1, both entry-level smartphones for �9 or less. These were alluded to at MWC, with dummy devices on display, but specs were in scarce supply. It's cool to Windows Mobile 6.5 getting some early adoption among manufacturers, but it'll be really interesting to see what they really do with it. Even with the Treo Pro launching on Alltel, Sprint and Bell, Palm (NSDQ: PALM) is hedging their bets and forecasting that most folks will be holding out for the Pre. I'd say something about the "calm before the storm" but I'm pretty sure the Verizon (NYSE: VZ) marketing team has beaten that horse to a bloody pulp. Estimates put third quarter earnings at $85 - $90 million, a significant drop from the expected $155 million. Shares dipped 83 cents overnight, but they're still riding high on Pre hype. It was back in December when we saw the pre-alpha Maemo 5 SDK being released. The platform is advancing, and now we have the full Alpha version released, bringing a whole new finger-friendly UI framework among other things. Although "Alpha" usually stands for "adventurous developers, only," Maemo team says the new release is a good basis to get started with Maemo 5 application development instead of waiting for the forthcoming beta release. It's been nothing but rumors and hyped-launch dates surrounding the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre, and to a lesser extent the Palm Treo Pro since the beginning of the year. The Treo Pro was supposed to hit Sprint (NYSE: S) in mid-January, and that never surfaced… Then, rumor was the Palm Pre and Treo Pro would be set to hit Sprint by March 15th. Now, some new launch details have dropped. MobileCrunch has reported that the March 15th date is at least half correct. Half, because they have learned that the Palm Pre will NOT be launching on the 15th, but the Palm Treo Pro WILL. The Treo Pro will effectively replace the 800w on Sprint, but I can hear the sighs of disappointment coming already. Still, this is something. Nuance at MWC: Nuance Voice Control 2.0, T9Nav released
March 8th is the International Women's Day and to celebrate the event, Symbian Guru is running an interesting contest.
Nokia's US-launch of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and its S60 5th Edition-powered touchscreen has been anything but smooth. Following on rumors that some Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 5800 XpressMusic NAM handsets were failing to lock down a 3G wireless signal, Nokia pulled all 5800 XM NAM units from flagship store shelves and replaced them wtih European models. The move sparked many to speculate whether it was the network or the hardware to blame (not that Nokia's hardware choices for the 5800 are questionable, or anything).
What better incentive is there than the kind printed on green cloth-paper, adorned with the faces of past US presidents? Motorola (NYSE: MOT) is offering their co-CEO Sanjay Jha a 9-figure payday, with the stipulation that they'll need to bring Motorola back from the depths of despair before cashing out. The report of a strongly incentive-based pay package follows on Greg Brown's recent admission of his and Motorola's lack of foresight in the smartphone market.
Verizon Wireless and Radio Shack parted ways a few years back, when AT&T (NYSE: T) was the leading US wireless carrier. Since then, Radio Shack has been a one-carrier type of retailer. Tomorrow that all changes.
The "how's" and "why's" of this latest leak aren't exactly clear, but it seems that Toshiba (OTCPK: TOSBF) might be working on a Windows Mobile flip-phone running on the Qualcommchipset Snapdragon mobile that makes the Toshiba TG01 such an incredible device.
