5 Best Up And Coming Stocks To Watch For 2015

A couple of days ago, I revealed that I had purchased an old investment book some time back entitled "Value Investing with the Masters" by Kirk Kazanjian. I was less than satisfied with the book and had placed it on my bookshelf mostly unread. Recently, I decided to endure what I felt was overall a lackluster performance at interviewing some investing greats and take the time to fully read it. After all, I reasoned, certainly there must be something I can take out of each chapter and apply it to myself or my investing style.

Eveillard has been investing for approximately 50 years. Born in France, he obtained a job as an analyst with Societe Generale, the French bank. It was during his tenure at the bank that he discovered value investing and was given an opportunity to manage a fund. The fund, First Eagle SoGen Global was sold to Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder Advisers, where Eveillard now serves as chief investment officer of several funds.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Baxter International (NYSE: BAX  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Baxter International doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 1.8%, and inventory increased 8.3%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue grew 1.8%, and inventory increased 8.3%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks worrisome. Revenue dropped 8.1%, and inventory grew 5.7%.

Systemically Important Financial Institution: the newest designation for a firm that's too important to let fail, and with the tag comes new scrutiny from regulators. Three firms, AIG (NYSE: AIG  ) , Prudential Financial (NYSE: PRU  ) , and GE Capital, are at the top of the list to be named soon.

There's nothing all that unusual in the pension problems facing Girl Scouts of the USA. Plenty of private companies and public-sector employers are dealing with the same issues and have had to take similar steps to shore up their pension finances. Like the GSUSA, IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) froze their pension plans several years ago, as both companies decided that reducing the unpredictability of pension benefits made the most sense for them in managing their risk. More recently, Verizon and General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) took even more dramatic steps to limit pension risk, outsourcing substantial portions of their respective pension liabilities to insurance giant Prudential (NYSE: PRU  ) . By doing so, the two employers passed off their obligations to an industry that's designed to handle the longevity risk that pension payments create.
