Top 10 Japanese Companies To Watch For 2014

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S  ) shareholders voted today to approve the company's merger agreement with Japanese telecom SoftBank, Sprint announced today.

The company said that 98% of the votes cast today voted in favor of the transaction. Those votes accounted for around 80% of Sprint's outstanding common stock as of April 18.

"The transaction with SoftBank should enhance Sprint's long-term value and competitive position by creating a company with greater financial flexibility," said Sprint CEO Dan Hesse.

SoftBank had been battling satellite-TV provider DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) since April 15 for the right to buy Sprint. It was only last week that SoftBank seemed destined to come out on top when it sweetened its proposal with an additional $4.5 billion in cash for shareholders.

SoftBank's original agreement with Sprint was for $20.1 billion for 70% of the No. 3 U.S. wireless provider. The voted-upon agreement raised that price to $21.6 billion for a 78% slice of Sprint, and it will put up to $16.64 billion into the pockets of Sprint stockholders.

Despite economic and political turmoil, equity markets performed well across the board in September of 2013 and over the trailing twelve months. The September gains reversed losses in August and also resulted in positive overall quarterly performance with a number of major indexes moving further into record territory. After disturbing the markets in May and June with comments that they may taper Quantitative Easing (QE), the Fed surprised investors with an announcement that it would not reduce its asset purchases in the near-term. The announcement removed fears that a continued rise in interest rates may stall the economic recovery, as seen by the market's negative reaction to the sharp rise in the 10-year Treasury rate in August of 2013. Investors were also comforted by improving fundamentals both domestically and abroad. The Eurozone may finally be emerging from its prolonged recession and a number of economic reports in the U.S. continue to show progress. Specifically, initial unemployment claims dropped to a multiyear low early in September and the housing market continued to improve, as evidenced by prices rising 12.4 percent year-over year, which along with the stock market's strength, has created a positive wealth effect for consumers. In response to this general economic improvement, consumer confidence increased at the end of September, and the index of leading economic indicators ticked up as well, suggesting that, absent the effects of politics, the recovery in the real economy was continuing. The dogs of the Dow you should sell right now include Caterpillar (CAT), Walmart (WMT), IBM (IBM), Coca-Cola (KO) and Exxon Mobil (XOM).

Here why these are all big-time stocks to sell:

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Another big loser was Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , which lost 0.76% of its value today. One reason shares may have moved lower was the report that the U.S. trade deficit widened more than expected in May. Economists had expected the deficit to hit $40.1 billion, but it came in much higher at $45 billion. The report indicated that exports decayed, which reflects slow or stagnant growth in major markets such as China and Europe. While Caterpillar does derive a large portion of its revenue from the U.S., the company needs other economies to be performing well, or it will suffer.

Caterpillar served up a double-whammy for investors, missing earnings estimates by $0.07 per share and cutting its full-year 2013 guidance by a full $1 per share. The big problem for the company was its mining equipment business, which has struggled in light of slowing conditions in China and elsewhere around the world.
