Top Diversified Bank Stocks To Buy Right Now

There's a general conception that the Internal Revenue Services is too understaffed at tax time to go after anyone but high rollers and blatant cheats.

Don't believe it.

While it's true that the IRS only audits a small percentage of returns, government officials are getting smarter about which taxpayers are the likeliest to be overstating deductions or underreporting income.

It starts with a high-tech analysis of all U.S. tax returns, calculating average deductions and calling out filings outside the norm.

TAX QUESTIONS? Send 'em to us; tax experts will provide answers

"The IRS gets literally mountains of tax returns," says Andrew Porter, a certified public accountant and partner with California firm Comyns, Smith, McCleary & Deaver LLP. Officials "feed the tax returns into a piece of software and call out the juiciest ones. It's a first cut that allows them to focus their examination attention on things that are most likely to yield additional tax for the government."

    Recent cases
Just last month, Fifth & Pacific (NYSE: FNP  ) defended itself against infringement accusations regarding its Kate Spade Saturday brand. Another apparel maker, Saturdays Surf NYC, alleged that the Kate Spade spinoff would confuse customers and dilute its brand. The judge overseeing the case decided that the two brands were distinct enough for both to use the word "Saturday."

Ralph Lauren Corp.’s largest competitors are Fifth & Pacific Companies (FNP) and The Jones Group (JNY). Of these three companies, Fifth & Pacific is currently the best buy right now due to superior buying pressure. Meanwhile, Jones Group is suffering from flat sales and deep-seated cash flow issues. I’ll discuss Ralph Lauren’s problems with attracting institutional investors shortly.

It looks like Juicy Couture and Lucky Brand have become too burdensome for Fifth and Pacific (NYSE: FNP  ) to handle. The company is reportedly looking to sell off the brands, leaving its portfolio centered around the fast-rising Kate Spade brand. Lucky has had some success in the past year, though Juicy has languished, stuck with the velour tracksuits of yesterday. While Fifth and Pacific hasn't confirmed the rumors, the sale would make a lot of sense, and likely leave the company better off.

At this point, it's not really news when Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) reports that it's selling assets to anyone who will buy them. The company's quest to scrape together $4 billion to $7 billion to cover its budget shortfall this year has it in the news seemingly every other week. In this video, Fool.com contributor Aimee Duffy discusses Chesapeake's most recent divestiture, and why the real winner in this $300 million deal is the buyer: Tulsa's SemGroup (NYSE: SEMG  ) .

  • [By Holly LaFon]

In early August SemGroup (SEMG), an owner and operator of oil and gas midstream assets, including pipelines and storage and blending facilities, closed on an opportunistic purchase of assets from Chesapeake Energy. The assets nicely complement SemGroup's existing core assets that stretch from Colorado to Oklahoma. While SemGroup will have to spend money to complete the assetsoney that financially distressed Chesapeake likely could not justifye view the expenditures favorably given their high return characteristics. From Third Avenue Management's fourth quarter 2013 commentary.
