Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. For the past several years, Berkshire has contrasted its own cost-free float provided by profitable underwriting against the industry (unimpressive) tendency to lose money on underwriting while generating net returns from investment income. So far, so good. Less edifying, though, is the repeated contrast of Berkshire track record of profitability to State Farm…even though, as a mutual company, State Farm profitability goals are inherently different from for-profit insurers like Berkshire. It true that through year-end 2013, Berkshire underwriters have ow operated at an underwriting profit for eleven consecutive years, but so have ACE (ACE), American Financial (AFG), AmTrust Financial (AFSI), Arch Capital (ACGL), Chubb (CB), HCC (HCC), Progressive (PGR), RLI (RLI), and W.R. Berkley (WRB), any or all of whom provide a more meaningful comparison than contrasting Berkshire results to a company that not out to produce a profit in the first place.

Look at Celgene (CELG) and Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) –Big Cap Biotech stocks that smashed through consensus EPS estimates in Q3 and upped guidance too. One of our biggest overweights in the U.S. portfolios is the Health Care sector.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) has inoculated itself against today’s biotech selloff thanks to its stellar financial results.

The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (XBI) has fallen 1.3% to $128.69 at 2:10 p.m., as Biogen Idec (BIIB) has dropped 4.2% to $293.91 and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN) has declined 3.7% to $291.81. Even Gilead Sciences (GILD), which managed to buck yesterday’s weakness, has dipped 0.4% to $73.59.

Not Alexion Pharmaceuticals. It’s gained 3.1% to $167.97 after reporting a profit of $1.56 a share, topping analyst forecasts for $1.26 and raising its full-year guidance. “Gotta love this company,” Piper Jaffray’s Joshua Schimmer and team titled a report this morning. They explain why:

[Alexion Pharmaceuticals] beat on 1Q14 this morning, lowered [operating expense] guidance, reiterated revenue guidance and raised EPS guidance. The company continues to deliver to shareholders and remains poised to easily deliver a sustainable 20%+ EPS CAGR through the end of the decade and beyond with plenty of room for upside in our model based on both Soliris performance and operating/tax margins. Recent weakness in shares creates a nice entry point for a company committed to quality. While this may not be the best tape for higher multiple growth stocks, [Alexion's] advancing pipeline, rapidly growing earnings, frequent beat/raises and high quality team suggests to us that organic EPS growth will power through any incremental multiple compression.

Alexion is up 18% so far this year, more than three times Biogen’s 5.4% rise and Regeneron’s 6.1% advance. Gilead Sciences has dropped 2% in 2014 and the SPDR Biotech ETF has dipped 0.8%.

    Alexion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ALXN  )
If there's one company that certainly has big shoes to fill this earnings season its orphan drug developer Alexion whose lone drug, Soliris, is anticipated to bring in about $1.5 billion in sales this year. For the quarter, Alexion is forecast to grow revenue by 33% to $365 million with EPS rising 45% to $0.68. Given that Alexion has topped Wall Street's EPS estimates by an average of 19% in each of the past four quarters, I'd certainly be expecting an earnings beat if I were a shareholder. My worry here is that with Roche demonstrating potential interest in Alexion, even a big boost in its bottom line may not be enough to sustain Alexion at 34 times forward earnings.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

What a day for the stock market, as the major indexes rose thanks to big gains in beaten -down momentum stocks like Salesforce.com (CRM), Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) and Netflix (NFLX), and jumps in International Business Machines (IBM) and Goldman Sachs (GS).

ATLANTA -- A credit card data breach has been detected that exposed guests at certain Marriott, Holiday Inn, Sheraton and other hotel properties to theft, hotel management firm White Lodging Services said Monday. The breach occurred at food and beverage outlets at 14 hotels, including some operated under the Westin, Renaissance and Radisson names, between March 20 and Dec. 16 last year, White Lodging said in a statement. The company said information subject to potential theft by cybercriminals included names and numbers on consumers' debit or credit cards, security codes and card expiration dates. Customers who used their cards at the affected outlets should review all statements from the time in question and consider placing fraud alerts on their credit files, White Lodging said. White Lodging wouldn't estimate how many card numbers might have been taken. Krebs on Security, the cybersecurity blog that first reported the breach Friday, said thousands of accounts had been compromised. The latest data breach comes after the FBI warned retailers last month to prepare for more cyber attacks after discovering about 20 hacking cases in the past year involving the same kind of malicious software used against Target (TGT) over the holiday shopping season. The incident involving Target, the No. 3 U.S. retailer, was one of the biggest retail cyber attacks in history. In a confidential, three-page report to retail companies the FBI described the risks posed by "memory-parsing" malware that infects point-of-sale systems, which include cash registers and credit-card swiping machines in checkout aisles. Restaurants and lounges affected by the White Lodging breach were at hotels in Chicago; Austin, Texas; Richmond, Va.; Plantation, Fla.; Denver; Boulder and Broomfield, Colo.; Louisville, Ky.; Erie, Pa.; Indianapolis; and Merrillville, Ind., the company said.
