Top 5 Electric Utility Stocks To Own For 2014

In the matter of how large the holiday sales pie will be this year, the size apparently will be small. That means retailers, both store-based and Internet-based, will need to take business from one another, and it is the companies that take the most in that battle that have a chance of doing well — but only modestly. There is no rising tide. Consumers have not bought holiday gifts in large enough numbers in 2013and will not between now and the end of the year.

According to new data from Gallup on holiday spending intentions:

Americans’ average prediction for the total amount they will spend on Christmas gifts this season is now $740, midway between the $786 they estimated in October and the $704 in November. Given how the most recent prediction compares with previous years — coming in below last year’s $770 and falling well short of consumers’ spending intentions in years prior to the 2008 financial crisis — the 2013 holiday season will likely be a ho-hum one for retailers.

Emulex (ELX) is a provider of a range of network convergence solutions that intelligently connect servers, storage and networks within the data center. This stock closed up 1.6% to $8.14 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $8.05-$8.22

    52-Week Range: $5.72-$8.99

    Thursday's Volume: 727,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 786,981

From a technical perspective, ELX bounced modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $7.95 with decent upside volume. This stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation chart pattern over the last month, with shares moving between 7.50 on the downside and $8.46 on the upside. This modest spike is now starting to push shares of ELX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if ELX manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.34 to $8.46 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ELX as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $7.95 or $7.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 786,981 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ELX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $8.99. Any high-volume move above $8.99 will then give ELX a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10 to $11.19.

Mid cap networking solutions company Brocade Communications Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: BRCD) has pretty much been a sleeper for investors since the dot.com bust, but that has changed over the past yearmeaning its worth revisiting the stock along with potential performance benchmarkslike QLogic Corporation (NASDAQ: QLGC), Emulex Corporation (NYSE: ELX) and iShares North American Tech-Multimedia Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN). I should mention that we have recently Brocade Communications Systems to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio because the company has successfully transitioned from being a hardware company to supporting virtual networks via software and it continues to offer best-of-breed technology.

One credit services player that insiders are jumping into big here is World Acceptance (WRLD), which is engaged in small-loan consumer finance business in the U.S. and Mexico. Insiders are buying this stock into notable weakness, since shares have dropped lower by 14.8% so far in 2014.

World Acceptance has a market cap of $734 million and an enterprise value of $1.2 billion. This stock trades at a cheap valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 7.5 and a forward price-to-earnings of 6.4. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 16.1%, and for next year it's pegged at 9.5%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $14.63 million and its total debt is $559.70 million.

A director just bought 129,580 shares, or about $9.27 million worth of stock, at $71.44 to $72.08 per share.

From a technical perspective, WRLD is currently trending above its 50-day moving average and below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been uptrending strong over the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $63.25 to its recent high of $75.20 a share. During that uptrend, shares of WRLD have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of WRLD within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you're bullish on WRLD, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above its 50-day moving average of $70.85 a share and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance at $75.20 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 169,386 shares. If that breakout materializes soon, then WRLD will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $79.54 to $84 a share.

Besides this, I would also avoid companies which had previously fooled investors by using things such as "creative accounting" or "aggressive accounting" (Remember Enron); had been involved in a scandal which required it to restate past financials or go to court with shareholders (Remember the Diamond Foods (DMND) scam); was unable to produce financial statements on time [One recent case being World Acceptance (WRLD)]; or was being investigated by the SEC. These are all some signs of management being dishonest, and I would rather avoid companies with such a history, unless there is a change in the company's management team.
