Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Evan Niu, CFA] !

Last night, Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS  ) released gloomy preliminary results with revenue last quarter expected to come in just under $207 million. More specifically, the audio chip specialist said it would record a $23.3 million inventory reserve charge. Of that total, $20.7 million is related to a "decreased forecast for a high volume product as the customer migrates to one of Cirrus Logic's newer components." That charge will crush gross margin this quarter by over 10%, and Cirrus expects gross margin to be 40.4%, well below its prior guidance of 50% to 52%.

Cirrus Logic (CRUS) recently released its results with a disappointment due to a shift in the pricing structure and the product mix. To the dissatisfaction of the investors, Cirrus revenue dropped 29%. The adoption of voice as a key interface for mobile devices is expected to improve Cirrus performance in the future as quoted by CEO Jason Rhode. Apple (AAPL), a major customer of Cirrus, continues to grow on account of new devices and penetration into new markets that makes Cirrus positive regarding its future despite weak results. Cirrus is also targeting the new market of wearable devices.

    The Cirrus dip
The first thing to remember is that shares were knocked down to those lows in part by audio codec supplier Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS  ) . The company's preliminary figures rattled investors since Cirrus noted a "decreased forecast for a high volume product" that had Apple shareholders thinking the worst. While some caution regarding Apple was warranted, the magnitude of the sell-off was not.
